Introduction: unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions for women are now a serious health problem worldwide. Emergency contraception can help overcoming this negative situation, and therefore to reduce maternal mortality due to this cause. Objectives: to compare mifepristone efficacy and safety as emergency contraception in a 5 mg dose versus a 10 mg dose. Methods: a prospective, longitudinal observational study was conducted at Eusebio Hernández Teaching Hospital in Havana from 1st January, 2011 to 1st September, 2012. A sample of 300 women was randomly selected into two groups. One group received a 5 mg dose of mifepristone and the other a 10 mg dose of mifepristone. Both doses were administered for 6 days (144 hours) as emergency contraception. The study was performed double blind. Results: there was a predominance of women of 28 years on average, 75 % reported not using contraception as a reason for requesting emergency contraception and 99 % reported previous use of a contraceptive method. 1.2 % of pregnancies were reported in both, the group receiving 5 mg of mifepristone and in 10 mg mifepristone. Conclusions: same contraceptives results are achieved when using 5 mg dose of mifepristone as when using 10 mg of this medicine.
