Introduction: menopause is a physiological period that characterizes the transition from reproductive to nonreproductive live of women. During this stage, hidden diseases appear, such as adenomyosis, which is characterized by the endometrium’s invasion into the uterine myometrium. Objective: to identify some epidemiological factors associated with adenomyosis. Method: a retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Teaching Gynaecobstetric Hospital of Guanabacoa, during the period from January 1, 2009 to January 31, 2014. The sample consisted of 75 middle-aged women who were operated by abdominal hysterectomy in our institution and whose pathologic result was internal endometriosis or adenomyosis. Data were collected in a register made for that purpose and containing the variables: age, associated pathology, symptoms, preoperative diagnosis and histopathological result, later on processed using the percentage method; and the results obtained were taken to frequency distribution charts for analysis and discussion. Results: the predominant age was 49-54 years (44%), the main symptom was menorrhagia (49 women, 65.3%), uterine fibroma was the main preoperative diagnosis (47 cases, 62.6%), and a histological result more associated with adenomyosis was uterine fibroma (31 patients, 41.3%). Conclusion: adenomyosis in women of middle age is associated with uterine fibromata, which makes preoperative diagnosis difficult.
