CABRERA DANIEL, Pedro. Psychology in diving. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 1999, vol.28, n.2, pp. 120-134. ISSN 1561-3046.

The present paper responds to the need of gathering fundamental information, so scatter at present, on psychology applied to diving. This information is essentially based on research works about professional and military divers developed under hyperbaric environments both in simulated and real situations. The contents of the paper is divided into 2 parts with corresponding sections: human performance undersca and human behaviour in diving. Diving stress and measures to fight it and increase work capacity are dealth with. The conclussions reveal that divers perform tasks similar to those of other professionals but under different environments that affect their performances. At first, these environments have an incidence and later a more negative impact on the intelectual process than on the perceptual and psychomotor processes. Personal traits, temper and diving expertise play a decisive role in the work performance. The majority of accidents are due to psychological causes; panic reactions can be avoided through an adequate psychological training.
