MONTERO GONZALEZ, Teresita; HURTADO DE MENDOZA AMAT, José  e  CABRERA ROSELL, Pablo. Multiple organ failure: Morphology of systemic inflammatory response. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2001, vol.30, suppl.5, pp. 77-88. ISSN 1561-3046.

At the end of the 70´s, the intensive medicine showed new facets of the health-disease phenomenon, for example, the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) as an acute threat to homeostasis. The MODS has been an important cause of death for multi trauma military or civilian patients. The morphological alterations found in the autopsies of these patients were called multiple organ failure(MOF), which is a systemic inflammatory response by the action of causative factors(trauma, burns, shock, severe sepsis, intoxication, major surgeries) that share common pathogenic paths. Key phenomena such as systemic inflammatory reaction, bacterial translocation, reactive oxygen species and apoptosis account for the pathogeny of the binomial MODS/MOF. It is prevented if we take it into account soon and prepare the body to face it. Once the systemic inflammatory response that serves as a basis unleashes, it is difficult and costly, even for the patient’s life, to reverse the situation. To prevent this situation, it is necessary to take into account that the most important factor is to administer as early as possible the modulators of the hystic response to the patients after the causative factor occurs.
