PINERA-CASTRO, Hector Julio  e  SABORIT-RODRIGUEZ, Adrian. Student scientific output: metrics on the subject in Latin American student journals of health sciences. Rev. cuban. med. mil. [online]. 2023, vol.52, n.2  Epub 01-Jun-2023. ISSN 1561-3046.

Introduction:

In recent years, student scientific output has become a frequent topic in Latin American student journals.

Objective:

To characterize the articles on student scientific production published in Latin American student scientific journals of health sciences in the period 2017-2021.

Methods:

An observational, descriptive and longitudinal retrospective observational study of metric analysis type of information of 57 articles from 21 Latin American student scientific journals of health sciences was performed. Metric indicators of productivity, collaboration and impact were analyzed.

Results:

The articles had an average of 2 citations and 0.7 corrected citations. High Price (0.7) and Subramanyan (0.7) indices were observed. The international collaboration index was 0.07. Revista 16 de abril was the most productive (22.8%). The year 2020 marked an increase in the number of articles. Letters to the editor were the most frequent (40.4%). All contributions were published in Spanish. Eighty-six percent of the authors were small producers. COVID-19 determined the main emerging focus of research.

Conclusions:

The articles are characterized by a low number of citations and international collaboration; high Price and Subramanyan indices; a predominance of letters to the editor as a typology, Spanish as the language of publication, and Cuba as the country of origin of the signatories; the absence of leading authors; and the influence of COVID-19 on the number of articles and their topics.
