SANCHEZ DIAZ, Armando Javier  e  INZUNZA MEJIA, Patricia Carmina. The State Owned Enterprises and Development in Mexico. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2015, vol.154, n.1, pp. 168-184. ISSN 0252-8584.

The present paper analyzes the historical importance of the Mexican state owned enterprise, as a source of resources to finance public expenditure, encourage production, and achieve distributive goals and the country's economic development. It also exposes the effect of neo-liberal policies on public finances during the last twenty years, and, in particular, the decision of privatizing most of the state owned enterprises. Besides, it proves that those conservative policies have not been able to promote a greater economic growth, and create better and more productive jobs. Finally, as from the experiences of some South American countries, the paper suggests a research on the feasible alternatives a future government might have in order to increase its participation in those enterprises having a strategic value, and that are currently privately owned.

Palavras-chave : state owned enterprises; neo-liberalism; tax policy; economic policies; privatization.
