This paper evaluates the contribution of new non-agricultural cooperatives (NACs) to local development in Cuba. The starting point is the systematisation of theoretical approaches to the potential of co-operatives for this purpose, as well as their limitations. The extent to which the CNAs have contributed to the development of the communities where they are located is examined by analysing the scope of their economic management, the direct satisfaction of local consumption needs, their contribution via taxes and coordination with representatives of local interests. It concludes with a proposal of measures to facilitate these socio-economic organizations to realize their potential and overcome their limitations in order to contribute to local development and, thus, to that of the nation.
