Problems leading to the outbreak of the February Revolution, 1917, which overthrew the Tsarist autocracy, on the one hand, and started a difficult process resulting in the Bolshevik triumph and seizure of power by the Soviets in October of the same year, on the other, are described and examined. A brief reference to major measures adopted by the new regime, and the former ruling classes' response to them, which led to the long and bloody Russian Civil War and foreign intervention, is made. Finally, the analysis of this process throws light on mechanisms implemented by the October Revolution to consolidate its triumph and later adapt to a polarized changing world.
