This paper is aimed at proposing a way of analyzing the strategic construction of a discourse that represents a symbol of cultural identity. Having justified the importance of strategically constructing discourses, five sequential guidelines on analyzing cases where identities are discursively represented are issued. These guidelines are as fallows: analysis of discourse contexts and co-texts; propositional analysis of statements; analysis of discursive acts and macroacts; analysis of discursive strategies; and analysis of the relation between the discourse structure and properties of context and co-text. The results obtained in a case study of discourses that represent a cultural identity ("José Martí" as a symbol) associated with "the Cuban people" are briefly presented.
