The present work performs a historical study of the processes of academic categories at the Universidad de Ciencias Pedagógicas José Martí de Camagüey, during the period 1976-2014. The work examines its evolution in accordance with the academic and scientific development of this institution since its creation, which made possible to identify five stages of transition, from its beginning to the integration of the universities in 2014, the main regularities and difficulties and the aspects that require more attention in the conditions of the new university. This research is an experience that may contribute to a process of improvement of the Cuban university model within the framework of its integration, as well as the training of its faculty and the set of actions that shall guarantee its transit through the established system of categories.
