The activity of the phagocyte NADPH-oxidase is one of the most important endogenous sources of reactive oxygen species in the body. This enzymatic system is made up of several proteins such as flavocytochrome b, Rap1 A, p47-phox, p40-phox and Rac2 which are distributed into different cell compartments when the leukocyte is at rest. During leukocyte activation, the various components are translocated to the plasmic membrane where they undergo a process of assembly to build an active enzymatic system. The characteristics of the various components of this system, the phases and interactions leading to the assembly and the enzymatic mechanism of action were analyzed Deepening into these aspects will help us to understand the disorders in diseases caused by an under-functioning or over functioning of the system

Palavras-chave : REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES; NADPH OXIDASE; NEUTROPHILS; PEPTIDE HYDROLASES; DEFENSE MECHANISMS.
