DEL RISCO TURINO, Carlos A.; MENENDEZ CABEZAS, Arturo; PILA PEREZ, Rafael  e  RAMOS RODRIGUEZ, José Carlos. Arteriopatía periférica en el alcohólico: reporte preliminar. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2003, vol.22, n.3, pp. 150-154. ISSN 1561-3011.

84 alcoholic individuals that were consecutively attended at the multidisciplinary consultation room were studied aimed at demonstrating the presence of peripheral arteriopathy. They underwent clinical examination, non-invasive vascular diagnostic studies (doppler and photoplethismography) and hemochemical studies. Males prevailed with 87.71. Most of them drank home-made alcoholic beverages. It was observed a predominance of the flattening of the pulse wave under the elbow. The most common findings in the lower limbs were ankle arm ratio higher than 1.2 and an increase of the peripheral resistance. Hypertriglyceridemia predominated in the hemochemical studies. It was concluded that the excessive consumption of alcohol produces occlusion of the arteries of the upper limbs and rigidity of the tibial arteries. Hypertriglyceridemia is the main atherogenic risk factor. Home-made alcoholic beverages are very harmful for the vascular endothelium.
