A retrospective, observational study was conducted to a universe of 6 patients discharged from the Institute of Gastroenterology with the diagnosis of pyloric syndrome from January, 1993 to December, 1994. Patients underwent the test of saline overload. The objectives of this study were to evaluated the diagnostic therapeutic, and prognostic usefulness and importance of the saline overload test besides highlight the role of the nurse in the performance and interpretation of the test. The test was positive in 100 % of patients; positive for 62.5 % during the 3 days and for 37.5 % during 5 days allowing for the application of other diagnostic radiologic and endoscopic methods, and confirming the diagnosis at the time of admission and usefulness of the test.
