CASANOVA CARRILLO, Carlos. Epidemiologic situation of HIV-infection in the health area of  Héroes del Moncada Polyclinic. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2961.

HIV-AIDS pandemic is still the worst of the scourges threatening the life of millions of peoples in the world. A descriptive and retrospective study was conducted in 42 HIV-subjects from the health area of “Héroes del Moncada” Polyclinic to describe the behavior of this pandemic in this district. The prevalence rate of seropositives in such area was 0.16 %, which was above that reported in the country (0.006 %). Among the infected there was a predominance of males, with 69 %, although it was noted a trend towards an increase of the infected women. The age range of the sick was from 18 to 56 years old. 88 % of them were between 18 and 49 years old. In more than half of the infected persons, the disease was at AIDS stage. It was confirmed that the groups at the highest risk were men having sexual relations with other men, but considered as heterosexuals, as well as those subjects with a low cultural level. There were 8 deaths, 7 of them with a survival of more than 10 years. The results achieved demonstrated that in spite of the fact that Cuba shows one of the lowest rates of HIV infection, the epidemic continues. Therefore, prevention and health promotion are still the main measures to fight this disease.
