PIJUAN PEREZ, Marilin. Possible risk factors related to surgical site infection in cardiac valves surgery. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2009, vol.25, n.1-2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2961.

Surgery of heart valves in many occasions is a need option in treatment of heart valvular diseases. Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the more frequent complications in cardiac valves surgery. The aim of present paper was to identify risk factors of surgical site infection. Authors made a analytical study of cases and controls where sample included 72 patients with valvular surgery, we considered like sample all patients with ISQ, a case for 4 controls. Statistical analysis: for qualitative variables we used percentages and for the quantitative ones, the mean, standard deviation (SD) and percentiles, for the relationship between ISQ and study variables, we used Chi2, odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results achieved were that mean age of operated on was of 49, 32. There was a male sex predominance (53,3%). ISQ risk factors included: ASA III-IV-V (OR 8,556; CI 1,022-71,639), diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR 6,143, CI 1,406-26,842), perioperative glycemia ? 6 mmol/l (OR 6,143, CI 1,406-26,842), and surgical reintervention (RO 7,667, CI 1,117-53,637). Diabetes mellitus, preoperative glycemia ? 6 mmol/l, ASA III-IV-V, and surgical reintervention were risk factors of ISQ.
