Introduction:

Cancer brings with it a number of factors, which can lead to physical and mental strain, among them, the pain, a sign and a unique and subjective feeling, considered one of the most feared symptoms, affecting not only the patient, but all family context and the health team.

Objective:

To know the perception of pain in oncology in view of the patient and the nursing staff.

Methods:

exploratory, descriptive study, with qualitative approach, performed with five patients and six nurses of a chemotherapy clinic of a medium-sized hospital Rio Grande do Sul Data collected through semi-structured interviews were analyzed content.

Results:

Three categories emerged that addressed the unveiling of the meaning of pain from the perspective of people in cancer treatment; the meaning of pain from the perspective of nursing professionals; and the care in oncology nursing from the perspective of patients and professionals.

Conclusions:

The physical / emotional pain is a reality experienced by patients with cancer. The nurses found to be important, the establishment of dialogue and listening to allies to scientific knowledge, leverage the complex and humanized care.
