The general characteristics of the school period, as well as the maturity requirements children should meet to enter school are expressed here. The orienting function of the family physician on this regard and the need to use the preschool period adequately as a preparatory step for the next one are also stressed. Some actions are proposed to be developed by the family physician in order to influence positively on the school children's health and family.
