A review is made on the prevalence of AIDS in the underdeveloped countries and, particularly, in Cuba, as well as on its mortality during 1998. Its social and economic repercussion in the underdeveloped countries and, mainly, in the African continent, is dealt with. The importance of the preventive task based on sex education of the population in general and, specifically, of the young people, is stressed.
