In the 80´s, many industrialized countries realized that the most distinctive resource of their companies was the working force and that the successful results in their work performance were more linked to the individual characteristics than to degrees and certifications, hence the work or professional competency approach began its booming. This brought about the emphasis of training on this aspect and the introduction of this term into the technical and professional formation. Professional competencies have turned into a topic of interest for the curricular designs in universities in order to attain the ideal professional capable of communicating, working in group and managing certain attitudes, dexterities, knowledge and abilities to solve unexpected situations and to generalize learning; he is ahead of the rapid obsolescence of knowledge. The present paper dealt with the origin of the term competency and its linking to higher education.
