HERNANDEZ SILVA, Juan Raúl et al. ULTRAMICS: Ultrachop microemulsification. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2008, vol.21, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3070.

Endotelial microscopy is one of the studies that are being conducted for corneal disease diagnosis; it allows postoperative forecast in the cataract surgery. An observational, descriptive and prospective study was made in 84 patients seen at "Pando Ferrer" National Ophthalmology Hospital and operated on from cataract using ultrachop microphacoemulsification (ULTRAMICS) in the period from November 2006 to February 2007. These patients had been performed endothelial microscopy before and after surgery in order to determine corneal endothelium alterations due to this disease. Variables such as sex, age, endothelial problems, effective phacoemulsification time and visual acuity were analyzed. Data was processed by using absolute, relative and mean frequencies and Student t test. It was found that males aged 60-87 years prevailed. Cell loss was proportional to age increase and to effective phacoemulsification times. Polymegatism rose at the postoperative phase associated to age and effective phacoemulsification time, and the change of pleomorphism. After surgery, acellular spaces were observed, which did not change. The presence of endothelial alterations did not influence the postoperative visual results.
