The first corneal transplantations were performed by Dr Alamilla and a Spanish ophthalmologist from 1936 to 1940 at "Calixto García" University Hospital. There frequently exist disorders that require the use of homologous tissues for implants as part of the therapy, and this has improved the prognosis of these diseases. A significant rise of the number of tissue implantations including the corneal ones was described. A retrospective descriptive study was made at "Ramón Pando Ferrer" Institute of Ophthalmology to identify the possible association of some factors of the donor and the recipient in the evolution of keratoplasty. Two hundred thirty five keratoplasties were studied for optic purposes. The studied variables were the donor's age, the recipient's age, death-to- enucleation time, preservation to surgery time, the graft condition and the occurrence of complications within the first three months after surgery. The 95 % confidence level was used. The only factor that seemed to have an effect on postoperative complication was time elapsed from preservation to surgery since when over 7 days-preserved corneas were used in patients, the rate of complications rose to over 20 %. There was no association of the donor's age, the recipient's age and death-to- enucleation time with the graft condition and the postsurgical complications.
