The public health policy, aimed at encouraging breastfeeding in Brazil , has been consolidating in the human milk banks in the last few decades. Since 1998, “Osvaldo Cruz” Foundation has been coordinating the preparation and implementation of the project called National Network of Human Milk Bank . It was found that knowledge is one of the main elements assuring legitimization and academic substantiation of this network. In this regard, the conducted study and analysis identify that, in addition to the movement of the participating social actors, there is a dynamic production of pieces of knowledge that should be understood. It was concluded that, on the basis of the understanding of the network genesis and of the analysis of part of the recent scientific production, it is possible to perceive the potential contribution of this network to the promotion of social changes and the drawing up of public policies in the field of woman's and child's health
