GONZALEZ REYES, Ada Iris  e  RAMOS, Mayra. DEVELOPMENT AND REPRODUCTION OF Raoiella indica HIRSTS (ACARI: TENUIPALPIDAE) IN LABORATORY. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2010, vol.25, n.1, pp. 7-10. ISSN 2224-4697.

Raoiella indica Hirst can damage several palm species, in particular, Cocos nucifera; it has recently been found in the Caribbean and also in Cuba damaging Musa species. To find out data about the development and reproduction of this potential pest in Cuba, a research was performed on coconut and banana leaves as host plants. Eggs were found to hatch after an average of 8,5 and 8,11 days on coconut and banana, respectively. The larvae developed into protonymphs in 8,7-8,8 days. Deutonymphs became adults by 6,6-9,2 days. The whole period from egg to adult was 31,43±3,31 days on coconut and 33,35±4,76 on banana leaves. Female oviposition period varied between both host plants, which was higher on coconut than on banana, similar to longevity and the total oviposition period. These are the first data about the development and reproduction of R. indica on economically important crops in Cuba but the results indicate that further studies are needed to evaluate the potential of R. indica as a pest.
