RAMIREZ GIL, Joaquín Guillermo. Economic losses associated with cocoa pod rots caused by Phytophthora spp. and Moniliophthora roreri (Cif & Par) Evans et al., at Theobroma farm, Colombia. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2016, vol.31, n.1, pp. 42-49. ISSN 2224-4697.

The objective of this study was to determine the cocoa economic losses associated with black pod rot caused by Phytophthora spp. and frosty pod rot caused by Moniliophthora roreri (Cif y Par) Evans et al. and know the variables involved in this context. The evaluation was conducted in an area of 67.8 ha sown with the clone CCN51 at the Theobroma farm, located in the municipality of Maceo Antioquia, Colombia, an area of tropical rain forest (T-Fr). Data were collected in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The variables evaluated were incidence, severity, and losses of production associated with the presence of these two diseases, in addition to some biophysical and crop management variables. With data on production losses, the costs that these diseases represented in monetary terms were calculated; for the rest of the variables, it was determined which one showed to be related to the losses. The results showed higher losses at the area studied by Phytophthora spp. than by M. roreri. These losses were mainly associated with variables such as crop age and high rainfall. The importance of this work is given by the detailed analysis of the economic losses associated with cocoa pod rots, as well as the determination of the higher significance of Phytophthora spp. in respect with M. roreri for the studied zone.
