Resumo

Three hundred and fifty three patients operated for hip fracture at Manuel Ascunce D provincial hospital within the period from January 1996 to January 1999 were studied; one hundred and forty eigth received elective surgical treatment and two hundred and surgical five emergency. Surgery adventages before 48 hours after injury, disminishing of complication numbre, bed death and poror mobilization, rapid rehabilitation and incorporation of the aged to society and its community, increasing of elective surgery number at the orthopedic service and saving of money for reducing hospital stating of the fracture were demostrated . Coinciding with bibliography , femenine sex, the patient group over 60 years old and the intertrocanteric injury were the most frequent in the study . Behavior of deceases and complications depended on the type of surgery applied (p< 0, 05) and it was achieved an institutional saving of $ 40180.42 Recomendations for decreasing complications number and improving aged care were performed.
