Background: The non invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) includes a serie of techniques guided to increase the alveolar ventilation without having to place an endotracheal tube or to use a tracheotomy. Objective: To describe the results of NIMV, with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), in addition to the conventional medical treatment of the patient carrier of serious chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and acute edema of the cardiogenic lung (AECL) that were admitted in the Emergent Intensive Care Unit (EICU) of the Surgical Educational Military Clinical Hospital “Dr. Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja” of Camagüey, from January to December 2007. Method: A logitudfinal and prospective explanatory study was carried out. The universe was conformed by the entirety of the patients admitted with this diagnoses. The 62,06% constitutes the sample, which fulfilled the established requirements to receive this treatment. Results: The index of failure was of 16,67%. The presented complications were the skin redness and the gastric distension. A reduction of the stay in the EICU of 2 hours occured. Conclusions: The use of NIMV improves the patients´ survival when reducing the respiratory complications.
