DURRUTHY WILSON, Odalys; PINA NAPAL, Juan Carlos  e  SANTANA ALVAREZ, Jorge. Esophageal cancer and human papilloma virus. AMC [online]. 2012, vol.16, n.5, pp. 644-650. ISSN 1025-0255.

Introduction: esophageal cancer is one of the most aggressive tumors with a global survival to 20 % to 5 years. Its incidence is increasing in the last years, fundamentally at the expense of those located in the gastroesophageal junction, because of its association with Barrett's metaplasia. Development: although esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is clearly associated with smoking and alcoholism, the association with human papilloma virus is even controversial. The first report of virus association and squamous cell carcinoma was made by Syrjanen in 1988. It is a tropical epithelium DNA virus, whose life cycle is inseparably linked to the process of differentiation of the pluristratified epithelium of the skin and mucous membranes. Positivity in 22,9 % of the 11 485 cases of squamocellular carcinomas analyzed by hybridization in situ and in 15,2 % of the 2 020 cases of squamous cell carcinomas analyzed by polymerase chain reaction has been reported. Conclusions: there are very few studies that confirm the correlation of esophageal cancer/human papilloma virus, worldwide and in Cuba, it is a controversial topic.
