DUQUE SERNA, Francisco Levi; CASTILLON PINO, Liliana  e  ARDILA MEDINA, Carlos Martin. Characterization of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in a Colombian population. AMC [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.2, pp. 187-200. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is the most common benign epithelial neoplasia derived from the odontogenic epithelium that appears in the maxilla. Objective: to describe adenomatoid odontogenic tumors observed in patients for 20 years at the Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of the San Vicente de Paul University Hospital and at the Dentistry Faculty of the Antioquia University. Method: a retrospective study was conducted with patients diagnosed with adenomatoid odontogenic tumors confirmed by means of histopathology. Some variables like age, gender, and frequency and characteristics of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumors were analyzed. Results: seven patients with an adenomatoid odontogenic tumor were observed. All the tumors were intraosseous (central); 71.5 % of them were follicular and 28.5 % were extrafollicular. The tumors were more frequently placed in the jaw. Women were more affected than men with a ratio of 2.5:1. The peak incidence was found in the second decade of life. All the lesions were located in the front area of the maxilla. Lateral incisor teeth were more frequently associated to follicular adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (60 %). Most of the patients showed facial asymmetry, no symptoms, and a progress longer than six months. Conclusions: the distribution and characteristics of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumors of the studied population are similar to those found in other populations. Nevertheless, the present research showed more cases related to lateral incisor teeth in young patients.
