CANEDO ANDALIA, Rubén. Approaches to the Impact of Cuban Health Research from the Perspective of Scopus. CCM [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.3, pp. 407-415. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction: the incorporation of Cuban medical journals to Scopus, allowed thousands of contributions published by national authors in the field of health in national journals currently enjoys a high international visibility. It is important then worrying about the international impact of scientific production of Cuba in this area. Objective: determine the behavior of the citation rates of contributions by Cuban authors regarding Latin American countries with historical productivity levels higher than or similar to those of Cuba in international databases. Methods: to know the citation rates of Cuban scientific production in health, SCImago Journal & Country Rank, (a platform for evaluation of science according to sources and countries provided by Scopus) was used. Citation indicators of seven Latin American countries: Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela, as well as Cuba were studied. Results: as a trend, Cuba occupies top positions in the classification according to recorded productivity in the area of health in Scopus regarding its location citation average in these areas, with a median of 5 and 7, respectively. Conclusions: there is a significant lack of correspondence between the visibility achieved by an important part of Cuban health scientific publication registered in Scopus Cuba and their citation rates compared with the studied countries of Latin America.
