VERDECIA JIMENEZ, Ana Iris; ALVAREZ INFANTES, Elisa e PARRA LAHENS, Julita. Mortality Due to Oral Cancer in Patients of Holguin Province. CCM [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.1, pp. 45-54. ISSN 1560-4381.
Introduction: mortality due to malignant neoplasms is among the main causes of death. Oral cancer ranks fifth place as oral health problems, and one case per 100 000 inhabitants is observed. Objective: to describe mortality due to oral cancer in the Holguin province between 2002-2011, as well as to identify the number of reported patients. Methods: a retrospective descriptive study was performed at the Provincial Department of Medical Records and Health Statistics of the Provincial Health Directorate of Holguin. The information was collected from the mortality database for the years 2002 - 2011 and the Provincial Cancer Registry CANREG 4 from 2007. Results: the mortality rate was 3.9 in the first half and 4.8 in the second one, predominantly males (77.0% and 77.3%), white patients (72.0% and 85.0%), retired (53.0% and 48.2%) and the age group between 60-69 years (27.5%). Marital status was revealed differently in the two year periods. The tongue was the anatomical site of death provided in both five-year periods with 37.0% and 42.9%, respectively. Of the total deaths in the second half, 71.6% was reported in the Provincial Cancer Registry. Conclusions: rates in the period 2007-2011 increased in ten municipalities with a percentage change of 18.7% comparing to the period between 2002-2006. Data CANREG four showed the need for control mechanisms that allow to report 100% of patients with oral cancer.
