Introduction:
senile cataract is an age-related disease and the world's leading cause of preventable blindness.
Objective:
identify the clinical characterization of senile cataract in patients of this polyclinic.
Method:
a cross-sectional descriptive study on 58 patients with senile cataract in Pedro del Toro Polyclinic area of Holguín municipality, Cuba, conducted from July to October 2017. The following variables were used: age, sex, involvement in one or both eyes, cataract maturity period, ocular and general pathological antecedents. The information was recorded on a data collection sheet prepared by the authors and summarized by percentage.
Results:
cataract was predominant in patients aged 70-79 years, for 44.83%, and the female sex prevailed, with 65.52%. 34.48% of the patients were hypertensive and 62.07% did not suffer from eye diseases. The incipient period of the cataract predominated in 37.93% and bilateralism, in 84.48%.
Conclusions:
through this research it was possible to know the clinical characterization of senile cataract in this population where mostly female hypertensive patients, between 70- 79 years old, were affected with incipient cataracts, predominant in both eyes, and little association of eye diseases.
