HERNANDEZ GARCIA, Sandra; RODRIGUEZ ARENCIBIA, Miguel Ángel; VINAS DIAZ, José Antonio  e  RIDAL GONZALEZ, José. The mentor's role in the professionalizing internship. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.2, pp. 21-27. ISSN 1561-3194.

Etymologically, tutor means teacher, friend, leader, companion, advocator, protector, guardian, director, support; it comes from the Latin word "tutor-tutoris". A participative study on the need for the Tutorial Teaching in Professionalizing Interns in Medicine major was carried out, during their rotation in Pediatrics, at Pepe Portilla Pediatric Hospital in Pinar del Rio, aimed at increasing the quality of the sanitary education, the assistance to the child, teenagers, and young people, of the social work, through the tutorial teaching to professionalizing interns. The ranking method was used for the diagnosis of problems and through the DAFO matrix an action plan was designed to solve them, assigning a small group of professors closely related to the students to guide them, considering their differences and thus being able to increase their level of knowledge and values. The results were achieved with excellent qualifications, in addition to a consistent social attitude with the values the medical doctors are expected to have at present. We drew to the conclusion that, at present, tutors are extremely important in the formation of new-type professionals required by humanity, and in addition, programs must respond to this model.
