HERRERA RODRIGUEZ, Liudmila et al. Clinical-epidemiological behavior of the asymptomatic bacteriuria in female old population. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.3, pp. 20-25. ISSN 1561-3194.

Asymptomatic bacteriuria occurs in 40% of the old men and women; the prevalence is from 6% to 7% of women between 50 and 60 years old and from 8% to 10% in men between 70 to 80 years old. An observational, longitudinal, retrospective and descriptive study was carried out in Pinar del Rio province from January 1st 2008 to December 31, 2009 aimed at assessing the clinical-epidemiological behaviour of asymptomatic bacteriuria in old female population and its therapeutic response, 96 female patients were included in the research and the follow up was conducted by the urologists and the same group of doctors, summarizing the information collected in tables. Chi square test was used to determine the statistical significance, obtaining the following results: asymptomatic bacteriuria was more frequent in the sixth decade of life, Escherichia coli was the most periodic germen both in-patients and out-patients, diabetes mellitus showed the highest percentage of associated disease. Among the risk factors studied were: lack of fluid intakes (present in all female patients) followed by the overuse of antibiotics. Finally, more than 50% of patients rejected the procedure of urine-culture at 6 months as general measures.
