CASANOVA MORENO, María de la C et al. Level of knowledge concerning diabetes mellitus type-2 in the elderly. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.2, pp. 122-132. ISSN 1561-3194.

An epidemiological, descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out in 2010 with the objective of determining the level of knowledge concerning diabetes mellitus type-2 in the elderly suffering from this disease at "Hermanos Cruz" health area, Pinar del Rio. Ninety one (91) diabetic- type-2 patients attended to the comprehensive care service for both sexes, ages of 60 years old and older (n=91) participated in the study. To determine the level of knowledge a survey was applied, this was prepared by the specialists of the Provincial Center for Health Promotion and Education, arranging a database supported on these results and with the use of EpiInfo 2002 program. Descriptive statistics was used and the data showed in pictures of frequency distributions and graphics. Female sex prevailed; hypertension was the most associated chronic non-contagious disease. Level of knowledge was insufficient in all groups according to the duration of the disease's natural history; the same came about with the patients suffering from chronic complications. Education in relation to the care of diabetic old people needs to be strengthened to improve knowledge concerning this condition to a better quality of life.
