A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted, aimed at determining some clinical-epidemiological characteristics in the diabetic elderly, taking the period from July to December 2007 in order to propose an educational intervention. The target group was comprised of 316 old patients, from No-215 Medical Office at "Luis A. Turcios Lima" teaching outpatient clinic in Pinar del Rio municipality and the sample received 90 old diabetic patients. Data were collected from the individual and familial medical history as well as from the analysis of health situation in the doctor's office; a database was created using Microsoft Access System and tables with absolute and relative frequencies by means of the percentage analysis method. Female sex prevailed and the ages of 70 and 74. Diabetic old patients behaved proportionally in the different group of ages, female sex prevailed. Among the associated risk factors sedentary life styles and hypertension existed in more than the half of the elderly. The relation: years of natural history and target organ failure in diabetic old patients showed that, peripheral vascular complications, followed by heart disease, years of evolution (11-20 years) reflected the high number of complications in diabetic old patients. A strategy was proposed to conduct an educational intervention to instruct the health personnel.
