This research paper was carried out to assess the academic and investigative components of the syllabus of Microbiology and Parasitology subject which is taught in the 2nd academic year of Medical Studies in conjunction with its practical implementation to the training of the medical professional that society needs; which must be in accordance with the mission of the University. A bibliographic review concerning the topics of the different perspectives of the curricular design was conducted; as well as a documentary revision of the medical training syllabuses where this subject is taught considering a set of regulations created to the teaching-learning process. Interesting characteristics to the conception and implementation of the syllabus were identified. The subject presents a pertinent balance of the academic, working along with investigative components to choose and to structure its contents as in the selection of the methods and ways of organization of the teaching-learning process foreseen in the syllabus. Taking into account all these characteristics, the programme of study, is appropriate to the teaching of biomedical basic sciences, in accordance with the trends and current approaches of the curricular design in higher education.
