BENCOMO RODRIGUEZ, Osniel et al. Pulmonary hydatidosis in patients undergoing substitute treatment for kidney function. A case report. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.2, pp. 303-310. ISSN 1561-3194.

Hydatidosis or echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitism caused by cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus and the family Taeniidae, having a worldwide geographic distribution related to cattle rising in extensive regimen or deficient sanitary infrastructures associated with low socioeconomic levels and lack of sanitary education. A high incidence of this disease is reported in Latin America and Caribbean countries, Europe and Africa, it is considered an under-diagnosed disease. In Cuba do not exist report of cases, despite there are several favourable epidemiological conditions to the transmission of the parasite. A female patient suffering from chronic renal disease and undergoing substitute treatment for kidney function with peritoneal intermittent dialysis presented a single pulmonary cyst, interpreted at first as a pulmonary neoplasm but its atypical natural history having doubts about the diagnosis. Diagnostic procedure was described based mainly on clinical and radiological criteria. Medication treatment variable was used due to the significant surgical risk with this patient. Encouraging results were reached, achieving a remission of the radiological lesion. Despite being pulmonary hydatidosis a non-reported entity in Cuba, the possibility of infestation in a determined group of patients can be present, particularly, those suffering from a certain degree of immunosupression.
