Introduction: english teaching is one of the paramount objectives of educational policy aimed at forming citizens with a general culture with a humanistic, scientific and creative thought,. Objective: to characterize the direction of learning in the cycle process of teaching General English from the methodological treatment of the ability of oral expression in the Medical University of Pinar del Río. Material and method: educational research with dialectical materialist approach in the Department of Languages ​​at the University in January 2011 to May 2014. Target group: 33 teachers and the sample: 17 teachers teaching General English. The level of empirical methods: survey teachers, the document review, interview and observation classes. Theoretical level: The historical logic, analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, generalization and comparison. Seemple or descriptive statistics. Results: 12 teachers (70.6%) failed to achieve the educational category of assistant professor. Only one (5.9%) reached the master degree, 14 (82.3%) have gone through basic and 12 (70.5%) courses, specialty courses. Only three (17.6%) graduates in medical education. About the methodological knowledge, two of them (11.7%) considered to be excellent, 10 (58.8%) good and five (29.4%) felt that their knowledge is regular. Conclusions: the methodological treatment of oral expression ability shows shortcomings in the knowledge of their teaching and task-based teaching expressed in non application of methods to ensure the construction of knowledge.
