Introduction: the use of information resources in research is a hierarchical issue in development policies of scientific activity in higher education. The evaluation and accreditation processes are compelled to universities to enhance the relationship between research and substantive processes in the university, including the management of scientific and technical information, to achieve social relevance. Objective: to evaluate aspects related to information resources for research, in the context of the development of the information culture and development of scientific activity at the university. Methods: research methods, such as analysis and synthesis, deduction and induction, as well as a wide literature review of literature about the information resources used for research. Results: this allowed an increased knowledge in the management of resources related to the use of the information and technology tools available. Conclusions: the use and management of information resources for research is a key element on the transformation of universities associated with the processes of literacy and information culture.
