Introduction:

in 2018, a new system of classification for periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions was officially introduced, which is necessary in order to increase knowledge to establish a correct diagnosis and treatment plan.

Objective:

to determine knowledge of the new classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions in students attending the last semester of the undergraduate program in dentistry studies during the 2020 academic year.

Methods:

descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study; a virtual questionnaire with 20 questions with closed-objectives was applied to 27 students attending the last semester of the undergraduate program in dentistry studies, to collect data in relation to these variables: age, sex and knowledge about the 4 groups of periodontal and peri-implant classification of diseases from 2017. The level of knowledge was categorized according to the Stanine scores in low, fair and poor. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22 to a 5 % level of significance.

Results:

a total of 27 questionnaires were reviewed. The mean age was 26,93 years (range 20-42), a major percentage of women (63 %) was obtained, where the age and sex did not influence on knowledge (p=0,662 and p=0,401 respectively). The level of knowledge was fair for 70,4 % (n=19), and 29,6 % (n=8) of students have a low level of knowledge. Not having a high level of knowledge.

Conclusions:

dentistry students attending the last semester of the undergraduate program in dentistry studies have limited knowledge concerning periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions.
