Introduction:

Kawasaki disease is considered a rare multisystemic inflammatory disease, generally self-limited. It is considered as an acute systemic vasculitis syndrome affecting mainly small and medium caliber arteries.

Objective:

to characterize the relationship between Kawasaki disease and Covid-19.

Methods:

a documentary review was carried out through the SciELO, PubMed and Scopus databases. We considered publications in English and Spanish, from March 2022 to March 2023 (12 months), using a total of 16 articles.

Results:

COVID-19 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome, however, the respiratory tract does not appear to be the only system susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. COVID-19 infection results in tissue damage and is mediated by innate host immunity, coupled by various factors resulting in the so-called multisystem inflammatory syndrome. Kawasaki disease is shown as a vascular reaction to this infection.

Conclusions:

COVID-19 infection can trigger the development of Kawasaki syndrome, due to the systemic inflammatory response; however, it is necessary to correctly differentiate the criteria to make an equivocal diagnosis. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment contributes to the well-being of the pediatric population in the context of COVID-19 infection.
