BARRERAS GONZALEZ, Javier Ernesto et al. Our experience in laparoscopic splenectomy. Rev haban cienc méd [online]. 2008, vol.7, n.4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1729-519X.

Laparoscopic splenectomy has demonstrated to be a safe and efficient procedure for the treatment of hematologic diseases. To evaluate the results of the laparoscopic splenectomy in the treatment of benign hematologic illnesses, we retrospectively reviewed the cases of all the patients that were taken to laparoscopic splenectomy between January of 1996 and December of 2007 at The Minimal Access Surgery National Center. Twenty four patients were successfully managed laparoscopically, with one conversion to open surgery (4,1%). Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) was a common indication for laparoscopic splenectomy with 15 patients (66,6%). The average age was 35 years old, the mean postoperative stay was 3 days, the mean operative time was 163 min and accessory spleen was detected in five patients (20,8%). Postoperative complications ocurred in two patients and one requiring reoperation. The results suggest that Laparoscopic Splenectomy is effective and safe for the treatment of benig hematological diseases with surgical indication.
