Introduction:

University life is a fundamental change in the development of the human being that can influence on lifestyle and in turn, have an impact on academic performance.

Objective:

To determine the relationship between lifestyle and academic performance in Pharmacology among dental students of the Faculty of Dentistry of Havana during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Material and Method:

Descriptive study of fourth-semester students of Dentistry. A questionnaire about lifestyle consisting of 20 items and 5 response criteria was applied. Its interpretation was done by adding the responses to each item. Academic performance in Pharmacology was related to the final mark of the subject. The relationship between the variables was determined by a Chi-square test with an alpha of 0.05.

Results:

Lifestyle was adequate in 51.76 % of the students. The academic results in Pharmacology were excellent in 37.64 %, good in 42.35 %, and fair in 20.01 %. No significant relationship was found between lifestyle and academic performance in Pharmacology. However, a statistically significant relationship was found between academic performance in the subject and the items that included physical exercise and emotional reaction.

Conclusions:

Physical activity and emotional reaction influence on student's academic development and must be interpreted in an integrative manner to improve the teaching-learning process in the university context.
