Introduction:

Low birth weight still remains as one of the current and main obstetric problems worldwide.

Objective:

To develop a prognostic scale for the prediction of low birth weight in pregnant women treated in the health care area of Guanabacoa municipality.

Material and Methods:

A prospective longitudinal observational cohort study was conducted in pregnant women treated in the health care area of Guanabacoa municipality during the period between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2019. The sample was composed of 182 pregnant women.

Results:

The variables related to age, gestational arterial hypertension, vaginal flow syndrome, urinary infection, smoking habit, short inter-genesic interval, previous premature births, and edema presented statistical significance in their relationship with the risk of low birth weight. All the variables showed an OR higher than 1 in the analysis. The variables showed independent and significant relationship with the risk of low birth weight in the multivariate analysis.

Conclusions:

The variables studied showed an independent and significant relationship with the probability of low birth weight in the pregnant women that composed the sample. A prognostic scale with an adequate predictive capacity was developed.
