The main purpose of this article is to show and analyze the trends and characteristics of the family formation and dissolution processes in Mexico and the State of Zacatecas, during the last three decades. It is an exploratory - descriptive work in which a triangulation of methods is used. Quantitatively, it relies on comparative analysis and statistical procedures for estimating correlation coefficients and the main components method, with the data that were available from the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Information (INEGI) and the National Council of Population (CONAPO). Qualitatively, a questionnaire (semi-structured) is applied to women between the ages of 18 and 60, as the population segment with the highest propensity to establish a formal or informal marital relationship.

Among the most relevant results, it is found that marriage and intrafamily dynamics in the country and in Zacatecas have undergone significant modifications, which are manifested, basically, in the weakening of marriage as an institution, the increase in divorces and the increase in consensual unions. Factors associated with the dismantling of traditional gender roles and the empowerment of women have removed the patriarchal structures which, together with complex negotiations regarding household income, family responsibilities and domestic obligations, have been generating conflicts in couples, leading to marital ruptures, both in Mexico and in the state of Zacatecas
