The constant educational, scientific and academic training of teachers is essential to achieve the acquisition and ratification of teaching categories in the Higher Education Institutions. The situation of the management of the teaching categorization process was diagnosed through a factual study and the application of methods such as: observation to the process of obtaining and ratifying teaching categories, the interview to executives, the survey to teachers, and documents review at the University of Sancti Spiritus "José Martí Pérez". These methods allowed the identification of strengths and weaknesses present in this process, which serves as bases to improve it in correspondence with the new demands of the Cuban higher education.
