The female population has considerably increased alcohol consumption due to the need to explore and seek new sensations or significant experiences. The meaning of the ingestion of intoxicating beverages in women has evolved in recent years, the main influence being the need to feel within a social group or simply due to depressive factors. The Objective is To explore the meaning of alcohol consumption from the perspective of women living in popular neighborhoods in southern Mexico. Non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, Symbolic Interactionism was used to understand the meaning that women attribute to alcohol consumption, a qualitative question guide was used, the data source was the group focal point, the population of interest consisted of women between 19 and 57 years of age, the sampling was theoretical. It was possible to determine that each woman attributes a different meaning to alcohol consumption, which is mainly related to attitudes, motives, social interaction and secondary effects, four categories were identified that were attitude, motives, social interaction and side effects, each with their respective subcategories. The findings of this study may be the basis of Nursing care in the prevention of addictions, through the establishment of specific interventions that contribute to promoting healthy lifestyles.
