CASTRO MURILLO, Cristóbal et al. Evaluation of the sustainability of sustainable food self-sufficiency in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.3, pp. 553-564. Epub 30-Jun-2022. ISSN 2218-3620.
The objective of the article is to evaluate the sustainability of Sustainable Food Self-Sufficiency in the province of Esmeraldas Ecuador through the characterization, measurement and evaluation of indicators related to the quality of the soils and with the practices for their conservation, since the land is the means of fundamental production of agriculture. The sustainability of Food Self-sufficiency is one of the variables that explains the sustainability of this process related to its environmental dimension. The evaluation showed that sustainability in the province has a medium level due to: the erosion of the soils dedicated to the three selected crops (rice, banana and corn) (the percentage of affected area, in the three crops, is above 50 % (rice 75.6 %, banana 55.6 % and corn 50.3 %); the low fertility, (in the same order 57.1 %, 49.1 % and 47.2 %) and; the limitations in the compliance with the practices to conserve the productive functions of the soil (two practices, of the eight evaluated, are not carried out in any crop: the conservation of soil organisms and the use of organic fertilizers predominates). And two others are carried out, in all three crops, but with restrictions.
