ARIAS-CEDENO, Quirino et al. Phytochemical characterization and antioxidant activity of polar extracts from fruits of Coccoloba uvifera L. Rev Cub Quim [online]. 2022, vol.34, n.2, pp. 211-226.  Epub 14-Jun-2022. ISSN 2224-5421.

The qualitative phytochemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Coccoloba uvifera L. fruits collected in the municipalities of Manzanillo, Niquero and Pilón were evaluated. The results show similarity in the composition of the extracts from the three areas studied and the ethanolic extracts of Manzanillo fruits have the greatest diversity of secondary metabolites; being the most abundant alkaloids, phenols, coumarins and reducing carbohydrates. The in vitro antioxidant activity was estimated by the Total Antioxidant Capacity and the Iron Reducing Power and the higher value of the ethanolic extracts can be associated with the higher content of total phenols determined by the Folin Ciocalteu method. The results make the fruit a potential source of antioxidants and constitute the first report on the composition and antioxidant activity of polar extracts from the fruit of C. uvifera in Cuba.

Palavras-chave : phytochemistry; antioxidant activity; polar extracts, total phenols.
