Introduction:

Mountain ecosystems have cardinal importance in the development of regions, delivering services that humans use to their advantage. Unsustainable farming practices, pollution and overfishing affect their availability for the present and future. Consequently, a research result that harmonizes the use of PER methodology in the selection of indicators by thematic areas and their estimation is presented, settling a Sustainable Development Index (SDI), to assess the ecosystem Mountains Guamuhaya, Cienfuegos. These analyses were inputs to develop a methodology for economic valuation of environmental goods and services and environmental damage, which constitutes the basis for sustainable mountain development.

Methods:

Expert method, economic valuation methods, technical DAFO, Instruction Methodology for Territorial Planning, mathematical and statistical tools Prospectiva.

Results:

IDS is implemented in the computer system SISNAM evaluating the ecosystem and less sustainable. Strategic actions are proposed; identifying the most representative ecosystem services and their economic value is estimated. Scenarios and strategic actions are obtained to promote sustainable development with Horizon 2025. Conclusions: Although there have been actions to reverse the current state of the Guamuhaya ecosystem, they are still insufficient. In the betting scenario, two governing policies are to consider: profitability and investment. Services and benefits from the ecosystem provide humans with production alternatives, food sources and raw materials, as well as recreational, learning, and cultural options; also opportunities for the defense of the country.
